Accurate Edge is officially approved by Whitford, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PPG, to apply their complete range of high-performance Xylan and Xylar coatings. We work in close partnership with PPG to ensure every application adheres to strict global specifications. By combining our advanced application techniques with Whitford’s industry-leading technology, we provide a protective barrier that ensures your critical components perform in the toughest industrial conditions.
What are Xylan and Xylar Coatings?
Xylan coatings are engineered by combining polymers with the lowest-known coefficients of friction with high-temperature resistant organic or aqueous resins. This creates a thin, continuous film that provides dry-film lubrication, torque control, and extreme chemical resistance.
For even more demanding environments, we offer Xylar, an aluminum “cermet” coating designed specifically to protect against high-temperature oxidation and salt-laden atmospheres.

Our facility utilizes computer-controlled curing and precise surface preparation to ensure maximum adhesion. Whether you are dealing with subsea fasteners or high-temperature aerospace valves, our partnership with Whitford/PPG ensures your project meets international quality standards.
FAQ about Whitfords Xylan/Xylar
In the extreme salinity of the UAE’s offshore “splash zones,” a single coating layer is often insufficient. We utilize Xylar 2 as an inorganic, ceramic-metallic (cermet) basecoat because it provides exceptional sacrificial anodic protection and heat resistance up to 600°C. By applying a Xylan 1070 fluoropolymer topcoat over it, we create a dual-layer defense system. The Xylar prevents the substrate from oxidizing even if the surface is chipped, while the Xylan provides the low-friction, chemical-resistant seal that prevents salt and moisture from penetrating. This combined system can withstand over 4,000 hours of salt spray testing per ASTM B117.
The thermal performance depends on the specific formulation. Standard Xylan 1000 series coatings are ideal for continuous use from -195°C up to +260°C, making them perfect for cryogenics or standard industrial heat. However, for extreme heat environments like engine exhausts or high-pressure steam valves, we recommend the Xylar series. Xylar can endure continuous operating temperatures up to 535°C (1,000°F). At Accurate Edge, we match the coating chemistry to your specific thermal profile to ensure the dry film lubricant does not char or lose adhesion under stress.
Yes, preventing thread galling is one of the primary reasons Xylan is specified in the UAE oil and gas sector. Stainless steel and high-alloy fasteners are notoriously prone to “cold welding” during high-torque assembly. A thin film of Xylan (PTFE-based) reduces the coefficient of friction to as low as 0.05, allowing for consistent make-up torque and easy removal (break-out) even after years of exposure to corrosive environments. This prevents the “freezing” of nuts and bolts, significantly reducing maintenance downtime and the need for destructive removal methods.
